Mauku Historical Cemetery

This free-space page is to record information about the historical cemetery at Mauku, established in early settler days. The location was on the land owned by Major Speedy, and his young infant son is buried there. Essex was buried by the Mauku stream, as there was not yet any consecrated ground for a graveyard. The area became the site of other burials until 1864 when new churchyards were then put into use. There are no individual graves marked. A memorial was established on the site to record those who were interred there or nearby and to mark the New Zealand Wars.

The memorial can be reached by way of a short footbridge over the Mauku Stream.

There are only a few names to be captured for this site, and these will be summarised below. There are no transcriptions and no grave marker photos applicable. There are 8 names for interments recorded at Find-a-Grave and at BillionGraves.
