Background
Maxcy's Place, also known as Mulberry Grove, was a modest property of 270 acres (at the time of the Civil War).
The eastern section of 150 acres may have derived in 1754 from property owned by William May.[1] The western section of 120 acres was carved out of Cedar Hall Plantation.[2]
Mr. Maxcy and his wife Priscilla owned this plantation until their deaths. After their only son, Thomas died (by 1826) the property was sold.
William Mikell Clark purchased Mulberry Grove from Francis L. Maxey in 1826. Francis L. Maxcy was the widow of Thomas Maxcy, the only child of Priscilla Maxcy who had owned the land.[3] When William Clark died he left this plantation to his daughter Elizabeth Clark who married William Henry Hanckel.[4]
In 1855 William Henry Hanckel, husband of Elizabeth Clark, sold the plantation she inherited, also known as Mulberry Grove, to Dr. William M. Bailey. It is possible that the couple did not live on this plantation before selling to Bailey.[5] Maxcy Place was managed by a resident overseer at that time, as William Bailey lived on another plantation.
