May Mayors challenge

During May, the New Zealand Project and the Kiwi Crew will be running a challenge focusing on the mayors of New Zealand. Any New Zealanders or those interested in New Zealand genealogy are welcome to take part too.

Requirements

Concentrate on pre-1989 places - cities, towns, counties etc. - local government reforms that year changed council organisation and some mayoralties changed. Pre-1989 mayors are more likely to be non-living.

For this challenge you should

• Decide on a place and sign up/list it on the G2G question as an answer. Check back in when you have completed the mayors for your place
• Find the mayors for the place. Many places have a list of mayors on their Wikipedia page
• Find or create and then source the mayor’s profile
• Categorise to https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:New_Zealand%2C_Mayors with New Zealand, Mayors.
• Add Notables sticker (If applicable - Wikipedia page or encyclopaedia entry e.g. Dictionary of New Zealand Biography. Be wary of NZ Cyclopaedia where entries may have been purchased.)
• Add succession boxes to link the mayors. (using https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Succession_box2 )
• Connect the profile to the main tree if possible

Scoring

No specific scoring but if you are a Sourcerer or Connector you can use your work to score the profiles there. Feel free to brag if you have an entire place’s mayors created.

On 4 May 2023, there were 93 profiles categorised as Mayor in New Zealand. On 1 Jun 2023, there were 285 mayors identified and categorised.
