TEXT Sources for Ulster & Ireland

This is a bibliography of historical, paper-published texts that were scanned to digital PDF files and some contain content relevant to McAdoo genealogy or to the history, geography, culture, and times of McAdoo families and their neighbors living in the nine counties making up the historical province of Ulster and the twenty-three counties making up the remainder of Ireland in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The entries are formatted in CMOS or Chicago Manual of Style, 17th Edition, "Author-Date" format rather than the alternative CMOS "Notes-Bibliography" style because this author finds the publication date of a source reference to be of prime importance.

Most, but not all, publications on this list are in the public domain because the copyright has expired or the copyright holder has explicitly made copies publicly available for free online reading or as free downloads in PDF or another format. Most of those that are accessible online are located and maintained at permanent online data repositories such as the digital reproductions in the archive.org collection, the familysearch.org collection, or others.

Annals of the Four Masters

The Annals of the Kingdom of Ireland (Irish: Annála Ríoghachta Éireann) or the Annals of the Four Masters (Annála na gCeithre Máistrí) are handwritten manuscripts written between 1632 to 1636 in early modern Irish and Latin that compile earlier manuscripts and chronicle medieval Irish genealogical history from A.M. 2242 the year of the Deluge to the death of Hugh O'Neill, the Earl of Tyrone in 1616 CE.
The chief compiler of the annals was Franciscan Brother Mícheál Ó Cléirigh from Ballyshannon, who was assisted by, among others, Cú Choigcríche Ó Cléirigh, Fearfeasa Ó Maol Chonaire, and Cú Choigríche Ó Duibhgeannáin. Collectively the compilers have become known as "The Four Masters". Written 100 years after the Annals of Ulster, some repetition of content from the Annals of Ulster is included. The first English version appeared in 1846 and the O'Donovan translation first published in 1849 with a 2nd edition in 1856 is available in PDF form:

Annals of Ulster

The Annals of Ulster (Irish: Annála Uladh) are annals of medieval Ireland that span the years from 431 CE to 1540 CE. The entries up to 1489 AD were compiled, at the request of his patron Cathal Óg Mac Maghnusa, by the scribe Ruaidhrí Ó Luinín, in Irish and Latin. The work was completed in the late 15th century on the island of Senadh-Mic-Maghnusa and now known as Belle Isle, near Lisbellaw, on Lough Erne in the kingdom of Fir Manach. Later entries, 1489 to 1540 CE, were added by others. The original manuscript is in Trinity College Dublin. The Hennessy and MacCarthy translation published in four volumes between 1887 to 1901 is available online.

Ulster Plantation Surveys

The government commissioned four surveys between 1611 and 1622 to investigate the progress being made in the Ulster Plantation and the information contained in these is the basis for most Plantation studies. These Plantation Surveys and where they may be found are discussed below.

1611 Carew Survey – A survey carried out by Sir George Carew and compiled and reproduced in full within the source Carew-v6 1873 referred to below and contained therein on pages 68–69, and on pages 75–79, and on pages 220–251.
1613 Bodley Survey – A survey carried out by Sir Josias Bodley and compiled and reproduced in full within the source Bodley 1613 referred to below and contained therein on pages 159-192.
1619 Pynnar Survey – A survey carried out by Captain Nicholas Pynnar and compiled and reproduced in full within the source Hill 1877 referred to below and contained therein on pages 445-590.
1622 Commission Survey – A survey carried out by commissioners appointed by the government and reproduced as an edited edition by Victor Treadwell as The Irish Commission of 1622 and published by the Irish Manuscripts Commission, Dublin, 2006. Seven of the 21 persons on the commission were chosen to visit Ulster. The names of these men and the counties they investigated were Lord Caulfield, Sir Dudley Digges and Nathaniel Rich (Armagh and Tyrone), Sir Thomas Phillips and Richard Hadsor (Donegal and Londonderry), and Sir Francis Annesley and Sir James Perrot (Cavan and Fermanagh). Their visits to Ulster took place between late July and mid-September 1622.
