McCool Name Study -> McCool Name Study - United States -> South Carolina
A number of McCool families settled in South Carolina in the mid to late 1700s. It's unclear if they were all related on their paternal (McCool) line - but they may not have been. This is an active research area.
Partial History of South Carolina
The Province of Carolina was formed in 1663 by a grant to eight original wealthy British proprietors; it was split into North and South Carolina in 1712. In 1769, seven circuit court districts were created that superseded previous colonial colonies. They original counties were still used as reference points on maps and grant-like documents until they were completely replaced by other counties (starting in 1785).[1]
Ninety-Six District
McCools settled primarily in the Ninety-Six District, the most northwestern of the seven original districts within the Province of South Carolina. Its boundaries included the current Abbeville, McCormick, Edgefield, Saluda, Greenwood, Laurens, Union, and Spartanburg counties; much of Cherokee and Newberry counties; and small parts of Aiken and Greenville counties.
Abbeville County was a large diamond-shaped county along the Georgia border from 1785 until 1897. Newberry County was similarly shaped, with its western tip almost connected to Abbeville from 1788 to 1901. Chester County, created in the Camden District in 1785, was located outside of Ninety-Six District northeast of Newberry County.
