McCool Name Study -> McCool Name Study - United States -> Tennessee

The first significant number of European settlers arrived in the area that would become Tennessee in the 1770s; at the time it was part of North Carolina's land patent.

The Southwest Territory was created in 1790 by the Southwest Ordinance from lands of the Washington District that had been ceded to the U.S. federal government by North Carolina. The Territory was admitted to the United States as the 16th state, Tennessee, on 1 Jun 1796.[1] In 1796, most of the land area in Tennessee was still controlled by Indians, while the state had formed just 14 counties in the north-central and north-east areas.

It's important to understand that Tennessee counties were created (and borders shifted) for more than 100 years. Read a detailed chronology of the creation of Tennessee and its counties.
