Who Was John McDowell of Amelia County, Virginia?

I, Jacqueline McDowell, believe this John McDowell is my 6G grandfather. There is good paper evidence that he was the father of William McDowell, who I believe was the father of John McDowell. But finding the elder John McDowell's whereabouts before 1738 is an absolute brick wall. Was he born in Virginia? Or another British Colony? Ireland? Scotland? The Caribbean? This is a mystery I'm hoping to solve.
