Named in honor of John McIntire, one of the first residents of Zanesville, Ohio. In his will, McIntire provided for the establishment of a school for poor children. The McIntire Academy operated between 1836–1856, when it was taken over by the Zanesville Board of Education.

Money from the McIntire estate financed the construction of the McIntire Children’s Home on what is now Blue Avenue in 1879.

The way the will was written (when John McIntire provided for the establishment of the home), only children from Zanesville were accepted, Children outside the city limits were sent to Tuscarawas County.

The McIntire Children’s Home stood on the grounds of the present Zanesville High School from 1880 until 1944.
