Chart of the
Families of McIleolan or McLellan
Chiefly in Glenlyon [Scotland], Fortingall [Scotland], and the United States of America
This Chart represents research by or for Clara McLellan Richmond (Geneseo, Illinois), Hugh McLellan (Glenlyon House, Perthshire, Scotland) and Andrew McLellan (Door Village, Indiana). A C Cameron, M.A., LL.D researched the records in Perthshire and compiled the information. It was published by McLagan & Cummings, Printers of Edinburgh, Scotland.
Letter about Chart’s Origins
In a letter dated 11 Feb 1929, Clara Richmond wrote:
- Suffice it to say that about 1903 to 1905 Cousin Andrew McLellan, Uncle Joseph’s eldest son, and I were so anxious to learn what might be found regarding our Scottish ancestry and the living relative, that by the merest chance he came into correspondence with a Mr Hugh McLellan born 1860 near Aberfeldy-Fortingall, Perthshire, who was likewise interested and who engaged Mr. A.C.Cameron A.M. LL.D of Edinburgh to undertake some research work for us, since he and Mr Duncan Campbell, then editor of “The Northern Chronicle” of Inverness, were the two men then ?living? Who were most familiar with the history of the McLellan families. Wm Hugh McL said - Mr Campbell is the best living authority on Glen Lyon history. He was formerly Parish school master and Registrar of Fortingall. He is author of two interesting books, The Lairds of Glen Lyon and The Book of Garth.
- Dr Cameron visited many towns and examined all available records, doing all he could to establish our line of ancestry. He gave us his opinion that my gr.father, John McLellan (1742 - 1817) was a brother of Duncan born 1759 of Fanduie, Fortingall, and son of Malcolm (or Callam) of Fanduie, Fortingall, under John Campbell of Glen Lyon about 1728. It is thought that Malcolm had a brother possibly Donald ? Whose descendants are included in the McLellan chart. You may be interested to learn how this chart came to be published: in 1905, wishing to convey to the friends over-seas an idea of the American descendants of John (1742-1817), I prepared a small chart which, without my knowledge, was incorporated with other Scottish records into quite a complete chart of all of our McLellan clan, so far as could be determined at that time…The chart was published by McLagan & Cummings, Printers of Edinburgh, Scotland. Dr A.C.Cameron being the compiler…In a letter from Mr. Hugh McLellan under date Jan 11, 1905 he says there was three different families of the name in Glen Lyon. The all buried in the same ground at Kenemore Churchyard. This proving them to be of the same origin.
Notes about Fanduie
- The title of the Chart indicates it was compiled from local sources, from the Parish Registers of Fortingall, Dull and Killin, as well as the tree compiled by Mrs Clara Richmond.
- Although no baptismal records have been found for John McLellan (b.1742, Fanduie) nor his proposed brother Duncan (b. est, 1733, Fanduie), there are other McLellan church records in the Parish of Fortingall citing “Fanduie” as the abode.
- Mary, Daughter to Duncan McLallan and Margaret Stewart in Fanduie was Baptized [Parish records of Fortingall][1]
- Donald & Catharine, Twins to Malcolm McLellan & Catharine Cameron in Fanduie [Parish records of Fortingall][2]
- Malcolm McLellan in Fanduie and Christian Cameron in Baldnald booked in this Parish [Parish Records of Fortingall][3]
- There are names on modern maps that refer to Finduie and Findowie:
- This Canmore map shows "Finduie Wood" due north/northeast of Fortingall and Glenlyon House. Using that link, accept Cookies, and change the Zoom Level (using +/-) to Zoom 8.
- Map of Little Findowie and Meikle Findowie, Little Dunkeld parish, Perthshire shows Little Findowie in the Little Dunkeld area.
- In Reminiscences and Reflections of an Octogenarian Highlander [4] Duncan Campbell said about Fanduie:
- "The Pass of Glenlyon impressed him much. He walked up the hill to have a look at Sithchallion from a distance, but when he returned it was not of the mountain he spoke but of a flowering plant which grew abundantly on the Fortingall grazings at Fanduie."
Errata found on the Chart
- Baptism found for Duncan McLellan (1796) took place in 1796. The Family Chart recorded one born in 1784, but this baptism has not been found in the modern era; the other information about this Duncan matches with the Duncan baptised in 1796.
