This research project will investigate the common (and possibly differing) ancestral lines of surname variants McNitt, McNutt, McNett, and others. We will investigate connections to McKnight, McNaughton, and other well-known lines using both traditional genealogy research and Y-DNA testing.

Because the largest pool of WikiTree profiles of these three spelling variants is "McNutt," I will use McNutt to refer to all of them.

McNutt-related Y-DNA Surname Projects

Most Y-DNA tested McNutt variant men are members of the McKnight surname project at FamilyTreeDNA. Some are also members of the MacNaughten surname project. Although we don't have a large pool of Y-DNA tests in any of these lines, we haven't yet discovered paternal lines that connect McNutt to MacNaughten (and spelling variant) lines. Most McKnight descendants also don't Y-DNA match to McNutt (although at least one does).

• We recommend that all McNutt men who take a Y-DNA join the McKnight surname project.
• We are considering the start of a separate focused McNutt surname project to raise visibility of the need for tests on these surname variants.
