Who was John Baxter

This court diary was kept by John Baxter between the years 1812 and 1822. John Baxter was a man of local importance and influence in Medfield, County Norfolk, Massachusetts. He was a Representative in the Legislature and a military officer during the war of the Revolution. He was remembered as an able and impartial magistrate, but his reputation as a peacemaker was particularly noted. It was said that his successful efforts in reconciling contending parties as arbitrator, would long be remembered.

Court Diary Provenance

The Court Diary has been passed down to its present custodian, Paul Harwood, via Paul's Great great grandmother, Mary Baxter (Hamant) Harwood, from whom certain Baxter heirlooms passed into the Harwood family.

Paul describes the Court Diary as a leather-bound manuscript whose cover is marked "John Baxter record Vol II". Also in Paul's possession is what he assumes is volume I, although it is not so marked. This unmarked volume appears to be financial accounting for the town of Medfield in the 1790's, when John Baxter was the town treasurer.

Paul identified that the Court Diary may contain useful genealogical information for any person who traces their descent from the occupants of Medfield, County Norfolk, Massachusetts in the period 1812 to 1822. Paul has worked with other Wikitree contributors to set up this page, transcribe the names from the Court Diary, and upload a scan of the diary to Internet Archive.

Credit and Acknowledgment

Paul Harwood is making these records and copies of these records freely available at Internet Archive and these can be freely accessed by those with a genealogical interest in the records. Transcription has been undertaken by Paul and Wikitreer Peter Cogan and we hope that proper attribution and credit will be given to them for the work they've invested in making this resource available. It would also be appreciated if Wikitree could be credited for hosting Paul's generous donation.

The Records

The records, described here as a Court Diary, appear to record the results of court cases, presumably heard before John Baxter, in the period 1812 to 1822. Occasionally the entries are not in chronological order and the reason for this is not known.

The reason for the creation of the Court Diary is not known. The diary does not record details of the actual court hearings or tell us what legal issues were at stake. No arguments are recorded, no evidence or witnesses are listed, and no details of the reasoning for the court outcome are given.

The records contain sparse details, but at a minimum, they may provide evidence of an ancestor's existence at a point in time.

A typical entry reads

  • January 26th 1813
  • Jason Williams vs Adam Boyden
  • Plantif appeared defendant made default
  • Damage $11.52
  • Cost $3.25

Indexing and Transcribing

Paul Harwood has scanned the Court Diary and all names have been transcribed jointly by Peter Cogan and Paul and indexed in alphabetical order. Transcription was done from original high-resolution scans.

High resolution scans of the diary have been scanned to archive.org and can be located at https://archive.org/details/baxter-court-diary-1812.

The page number next to each name refers to the page on the archive.org scan of the Court Diary on which the entry is located.
