Seeking information/confirmation on who the father of James D. Melton, son of Elizabeth Garrett, was. A name has been used for over 80 years however there is zero proof that the (supposed) marriage took place. The information we have is as follows:

Elizabeth (b.1899 in Monroe Co.) said to have married James E. Melton (b. 12/11/1896 in Monroe, Co.) in roughly 1916. The story goes, per my father and grandmother - Elizabeth's dil - , Elizabeth married this fella to get out of her living situation as she did not like farm work. She moved in with this fellas family but left soon thereafter as she was made to do housechores, etc. When she left, the assumption has been made, that she was so angry that she didnt tell the fella that she was pregnant. To my knowledge there has never been mention of a divorce. She moved back in with her parents, had a son, my grandfather, and married, with proof, a fella in 1921, Clifton Black.
