Location: Mountains in Sparta, White County, Tennessee.
Notes: Earliest childhood memories;
Juanita said that when she was little "She used to look up at the sky and wonder where she (Cora her Mother) was at night."
Her recollection of her Mother; Grandma (Cora) Davis. "Mom said that she fixed milk and cookies and put them on her bedstand and Santa Claus came in the night and got them while she was asleep" She was younger than seven years old at the time. "After the death of Her Mom, some good person left a great big box of toys on their back porch for Christmas. She said that they (Virgle, Bob, and Mom) played with them and played with them".
She remembered eating flapjacks and fried potatoes for breakfast they were cold and the grease had solidified on the potatoes. Marion had fixed breakfast before going off to the coal mines to work. She noted that he would fry the potatoes for us kids and then take the potato peelings for his lunch, he would put them in a quart lard bucket that he carried his lunch in, I guess that is what was called a lunch pail.
"Daddy (Marion) would build a fire in the stove before he went to work in the morning. Then, us kids would let the fire go out and we would be cold until he got home at night from the mines."
She remembered that some women? that knew us kids gave us a dish of food two or three times a week she placed it on the board fence in the backyard.
Juanita said that she used to sleep with her dad when she was young to keep warm. She must have been five or six.
When Juanita left Tennessee she remembered that "when she kissed him (Marion, her dad) she knew that she would never see him again...He was in bed sick.
"She said; She was hemorrhaging (with Max but, she was Kenny) when Grandpa Marion Davis died and that was the reason she couldn't go to the funeral." Marion died on 20 December 1950 just about three weeks before Kenny was born.
Her final statement was that. "He (Marion) gave us all he could."
