Merriment Sunshine Club

Merriment Sunshine Club

The Merriment Sunshine Club ("MSC") was formed in Wilberforce, New South Wales, at a meeting of residents on 2 February 1924. It was intended to organise social activities and encourage youth participation in the community. Activities primarily included evenings for games, competitions, music and dancing, as well as picnics at local beauty spots.

The name reflected its purpose of spreading happiness among its members and the community, and to offer assistance, cheer and comfort in times of distress. Consistent with these ideals, the MSC collected articles and gifts for donation to the Windsor District Hospital and Windsor Home for the Infirm, for which it was publicly thanked by the hospital management.

Members contributed one shilling per month toward a light supper and running expenses. Most organisation seems to have been handled equally by men and women, but sometimes sole responsibility for managing aspects of meetings (such as providing the supper) fell specifically to men, single men, single women, married men or married women.

The MSC's officers were chosen at the inaugural meeting on 2 February 1924, where the membership fee was also set. Elections were held annually thereafter. At its second meeting in March 1924, the MSC chose blue and gold as its colours and auditors were elected. This was followed by a third meeting in April 1924, where the club's rules were framed and endorsed.

MSC gatherings were originally hosted by members but, after more than 100 adults attended the MSC's first social evening in June 1924, it was decided that monthly meetings would be held in the Australian Hall, Wilberforce. After the Australian Hall was demolished, the May 1930 meeting was held at the School of Arts, Freemans Reach, before meetings moved to the new School of Arts, Wilberforce.

Membership was limited and there was a waiting list to fill vacancies: at the October 1926 meeting, 12 nominations were made to fill three vacancies.

Evenings typically ended with singing "Auld Lang Syne" and "God Save the King."

Euchre was a popular card game among the MSC's members, and the club held several tournaments.

The last mention of the MSC in the local newspaper is from 13 March 1936, reporting that the club had provided a floral tribute for a funeral.

Meetings

Meetings were held monthly from February 1924. Early meetings were held at the homes of members, but from 21 June 1924 most were held at the Australian Hall in Wilberforce. A meeting planned for March 1924 lapsed out of respect to the late Mrs G Greentree.

Club Secretary Mrs A E Argent provided a regular report from the MSC, which was published in the Windsor and Richmond Gazette. Some meetings were not reported.
