About the Project

The Merritt Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Merritt name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Merritt name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Merritt's), by time period (18th Century Merritt's), or by topic (Merritt DNA, Merritt Occupations, Merritt Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

I am in the beginning stages of working on a One Name Study for the Merritt surname. Since I became interested in genealogy, I have developed a special interest in the name, which is also my surname. My brickwall ancestor Jonathan Merritt was another inspiration for the study. Right now, my research is focused in the Southeastern United States, but I hope to later expand it to the whole US and other countries. My goal is to determine how all the Merritt families are connected, and discover the origins of my Merritt line. I started my research with the assumption that the surname Merritt was not that common because I didn't know many people with the same surname other than family. So far, I have found it is a lot more common than I thought!!

Currently identified Merritt groups with the earliest ancestor:

  • Henry Merritt (1590-1653) of Scituate, Massachusetts
  • Thomas Merritt (1634-1725) of Rye, New York
  • Samuel Marryott (1685-aft 1749) of Newport, Rhode Island
  • Edward Merritt (1724-1797) of Essex, Virginia

Others will be added as the research progresses.

I also am a Merritt (4545). My line in the US begins back in Virginia but has a Merritt in Henry County, Georgia. They traveled west from there and stopped over in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. My Great Grandfather went on to Texas to stay. Mainly East Texas and Houston.

My DNA is through Ancestry.com but I believe it is part of WiKiTree.

Hello cousins,

https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/merritt/about/background There is an existing Merritt Surname DNA group at Family Tree DNA. It was started some years ago for Merritt and now includes variants such as Mariot and Merriott. Spelling changes are common in these families.

It's a good first stop to see the lineages that have already been sorted using Y-DNA, and see if you recognize some of your forbears. The group had lost its admin for a time, but has new admins. Anyone with the relevant surnames please take a look and let's combine our findings where it's useful. Don't be daunted by the spreadsheet which strives to group testers by paternal line. This can be a useful tool to break through brick walls or help spark where to look for others of the same line. https://www.familytreedna.com/public/Merritt?iframe=ycolorized

They have traveled far. I have seen a record for Wm Marritt, age 26, who came from London to Barbados in 1635, in Hotton's "List of Persons of Quality".

If you are a Merritt, Marriott etc and you have a Y haplogroup, even from from another testing company, this explains how you can further research it: https://dna-explained.com/2022/06/30/familytreedna-discover-launches-including-y-dna-haplogroup-ages/

I would like to join your project. My 4th great-grandmother on my maternal line was Phoebe (Merritt) Hoyt. She's unfortunately my brick wall, I can't find her parents' names anywhere. I've done the mtDNA testing, still can't find anything. Sometimes her name is misspelled as "Phebe" or "Pheby", and here on WikiTree, the person who added her has misspelled her last name as "Merriett." Phoebe lived and died in New York, either 1821 or 1823 and died in 1870.
