Pauline Griffin and youngest children were enslaved from an unknown date until Emancipation/end of hostilities. House built c. 1810 by Vernon Metcalfe and wife Katherine Catlett Metcalfe; Vernon died 1817; son James Metcalfe inherited but was constrained by guardian until age of majority c. 1824. He married Margaret Harrison; she had one daughter Katie, who died young. Margaret sued for divorce on grounds of verbal and physical cruelty and won her case. James died in 1869.
