Origin of METZ name

Literally, the name METZ could either mean "one who made knives and daggers," for "Metz" is the mediaeval form of "Messer," or it could mean "one who operates a mill," for "metze" was the medaieval weight scale for foodstuff such as corn and flour. Metz is also the Germanized form of a city on the Moselle River in what is now France, not far from Saarbrucken, Germany. Other than in the US, most people named Metz live in Germany.

Related Surnames and Surname Variants

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual team studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (Germany Metzes), by time period (18th Century Metzes), or by topic (Metz DNA, Metz Occupations, Metz Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.
