Research notes looking for Charles Gardner and possible family including father Jesse, brother Daniel B, and unknown relative Lydia in early New York State.

Searches included FamilySearch online Land Records https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/2078654 and Probate Records https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1920234 along with the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries https://digital.newberry.org/ahcb/ to ascertain which counties to search over time.

Probate records for Jesse Gardner were not found. Sands-1865 16:31, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

Possible locations for the family follow the typical migration route of the time, starting in or around Troy in Rensselaer County, then traveling west along the Mohawk Turnpike to Herkimer and Oneida Counties and then continuing on the Seneca Turnpike to east of the present day Buffalo. From there, they may have continued along the eastern/southern shore of Lake Erie into Illinois.

Online trees suggest that his parents may have been Jesse Gardner and Dolly Brown, and that he had a brother Daniel B Gardner.

The grave for Daniel B Gardner, unsourced, says that he was the son of Jesse Gardner and Dolly Brown. Daniel's will [1] does not name any siblings or parents. He had dealt in real estate.

Although there were no Jesse Gardner found in New York probate records, many are found in the New York land records.

There may have been MANY Jesse Gardners, at least I see lots of land records. Here's one for Jesse buying land in Sangerfield in 1814. (Sangerfield is in Oneida County just west of Utica). "United States, New York Land Records, 1630-1975," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G9WQ-7QD7?cc=2078654&wc=M7HR-C6D%3A358135701%2C358420101 : [REFERENCE-ERROR]), Herkimer > Deeds 1814-1815 vol 25-26 > image 149 of 584; multiple county courthouses, New York.

Also in 1814 Jesse and Dolly his wife sold land in Sangerfield "United States, New York Land Records, 1630-1975," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-99WQ-77LL?cc=2078654&wc=M7HR-C6D%3A358135701%2C358420101 : [REFERENCE-ERROR]), Herkimer > Deeds 1814-1815 vol 25-26 > image 402 of 584; multiple county courthouses, New York. I didn't look closely to see if it was the same land.

When Jesse and Dolly his wife sold the land in Sangerfield they lived in Plainfield, Otsego County. On 21 Mar 1845 Dolly Gardner of Syracuse sold land to Rowland Gardner also of Syracuse. The land was in Plainfield, Otsego County.. BINGO. It was adjacent to the land of Cyrus Brown and was the same piece of land theretofore conveyed by Asa Gardner and Lydia his wife of the City of Troy to Jesse Gardner and Dolly Gardner his wife.
