Source: transcribed in the book Paul Morphy: the pride and sorrow of chess by David Lawson. Miguel or Michael Morphy was the famous chess-player Paul Morphy's grandfather.
In the book, David Lawson states that Michael Morphy continued on as American consul at Malaga until the end of the century; another was appointed in January 1800. It would appear that he died some months before this date, for nothing further is known of him after his exchange of letters with Timothy Pickering in 1799.
