Background

The population of North Ronaldsay expanded significantly in the 1700s, driven by the kelp industry. However, the collapse of this industry in the early 1800s left North Ronaldsay unable to support the large population. The laird of Ronaldsay came to an arrangement with the proprietor of Eday for a group to settle on the undeveloped side of Eday. A total of 32 families, consisting of 80 young men and women, and their children, left their homes for Eday in 1836.[1]

This mass emigration was the single largest movement of people from Ronaldsay in its history and many of their descendants remained on Eday to present day. It also marked an important stage in the development of Eday as an island.

This page brings together the records of the families who were part of the migration.
