Biography
The example profiles aren't pre-1700, but can still be used as an example for WikiTree style usage, as well as inline citations. You can pick ANY pre-1700 hundred profile out there and work on it. It doesn't have to be your ancestor. For example: You can stay with a family 'surname' such as Giles or Hennager.

- Using William as an example:
- William was born on the 23rd of June 1782, in Fulham, England.[1]
- I didn’t type the [1] when I wrote the bio - I typed this:
- William was born on the 23rd of June 1782, in Fulham, England.<ref name="UK 1851"/>
- By putting the ref name tag, WikiTree automatically numbers it. You only have to put the full source once.
- <ref name="UK 1851"> "1851 England Census," database with images, ''Ancestry'' ([https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=8860&h=540257 1851 England Census on Ancestry$] : accessed 4 March 2018), entry for Wm Bernard Terry, ; citing Census Returns of England and Wales, 1851. Kew, Surrey, England: The National Archives of the UK (TNA).</ref>
- The next time you use it you just copy the first part <ref name="UK 1851"> and then put a forward slash in it. <ref name="UK 1851"/> When you look at the Source section you will see how many times you used that source. WikiTree does that automatically… 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 etc

- Hints for WikiTree research:
- Use the 'Research' button on each profile for Ancestry and FamilySearch
- Use your own text for Google searches, trying several variations. First look at 'More' and 'Books.' If nothing is found, look at the 'All' tab. Examples of variations:
- Duncan Lindsay Scotland
- Duncan Lindsay 1726 Scotland
- Duncan Lindsay New York
- Duncan Lindsay Anna McDougall
- Duncan Lindsay married Anna McDougall
- Duncan Lindsay Migrated
- Duncan Lindsay died 1791

Then, go into the [1] William married Susanna Bernard in 1811 at Christ Church, Greyfriars, Newgate, London, England.[2] Their first born, William, arrived in 1812. He was christened at St Giles-without-Cripplegate in London, England.[3] Their daughters Susannah[4] and Mary[4] were born in 1817 and 1828, both in St Lukes, Middlesex, England.
William, age sixty-eight, was living on Edwin Street in Milton, Kent, England when the 1851 census was taken.[4] He was retired, but had been in the service of the Honourable East India Company (HEIC).[4] In the home with him was his wife Susannah (63), daughter Susannah (34), daughter Mary (23) and granddaughter Georgina (8).[4] His daughter Susannah was working as a Milliner and Dressmaker. Neither of his daughters were marked as married. His son William (39) was living in Stepney, Middlesex with his wife and five children.[4]
Ten years later William (79) was still living in Milton, Kent; but now on Peacock street.[5] His occupation was listed as 'Pensioner.'[5] William's wife Susannah (74) was also in the home, as was his daughter Mary (32).[5] Mary was listed as 'Unmarried,' and had no occupation.[5]
William lived to the age of eighty-four. His death was registered in the third quarter of 1866, in Reigate, Surrey, England.[6] William was buried on the 31st July 1866 at Burstow, Surrey, England.[7] The ceremony was performed by John Davis.[7]
Residence
- 1841: Bombay[8]
- 1851: Milton, Kent, England[4]
- 1861: Milton, Kent, England[5]
- 1866: Outwood, Surrey, England[7]
Research Notes
- Milton to Outwood is about a hundred miles. Is this his burial record? Had he moved to be with family, or in a hospital, in 1866?
- Where is the 1831 census for William?
- There were twelve marriage for a John Terry in the years before William's birth. Out of those twelve, only one married an Elizabeth. This was Elizabeth Irons, with the marriage occurring in St Marylebone, London, England.[9] This is the only likely set of parents for William.

- ↑ section and add name="xxx" Note: I use the ref name= style, then copy just that first part <ref name="xxxx"> and paste it after each sentence that it applies to. You DO need to add in a forward slash <ref name="xxxx"/>. This way, you find more information that fits into the middle of a paragraph, each sentence is already cited. If you only put the citation at the end - some of your sentences may lose that citation later on.
- If you aren't comfortable with the 'name' added to the citation - just use the Citation button. Let people know where each bit of information came from.
- On a Post-1700 profile I prefer to do the sections as such: residence, then family, then any Military, then any Death & Legacy found, THEN write the bio (it still goes at the top of the page). This allows you to track migration, check the children's birthplaces against the residence, keep the sources out of the main biography, and makes errors easier to find. I also find it useful for creating the actual bio - as I can then draw from the information I have laid out. Everyone has their own way of researching and creating profiles - so find a style and manner that works for YOU.
- Keep a Windows Notepad file on commonly used, or hard to remember, items (such as census tables you can copy and paste, a 'generic' link for Ancestry you can adapt, the FindAGrave template, link to the WT flag page, Migrating Ancestor sticker, Minimal profile headings, etc.
- Look at profiles that others have created within your era for ideas. The older ones can be looked at in 'Edit' mode to see how they created certain sections.

I actually prefer to do the Residence section without the tables. Note: you can also use the tables in the Sources section under the citation for that census record. I add the Residence section as follows:
- === Residence ===
- :'''1880''':
- :'''1900''':
- :'''1910''':
Which gives you the following:
Residence
- 1880:
- 1900:
- 1910:
Then you can add the locations and citations
Residence
- 1880: Harrison County, Kentucky[2]
- 1900: Cynthiana, Harrison, Kentucky[3]
- 1910: Cynthiana, Harrison, Kentucky[5]
