Yalobusha County, Mississippi Marriages, Volume A was lost and with it the record of most marriages that took place between the formation of Yalobusha County in 1833 and approximately 1846 when the county began recording marriages in Volume B. Though the marriage records themselves were lost, an index for marriages recorded in Volume A remains. [1] As such the names of the people married are known, the fact that they were married in Yalobusha County, Mississippi between 1833 and 1845 is known, and to some extent a chronology of the marriages is known--as the index entries have page numbers which roughly correspond to the order in which persons were married. [2] Approximately 632 marriages that occurred between the formation of the county in 1833 and 1845 were recorded there. These marriages are included in Ancestry.com's "Mississippi, Compiled Marriage Index, 1776-1935" but each is identified as having taken place in 1847. The marriages in question have no month or day--just the year 1847. [3] None of the marriages Ancestry.com identifies as having taken place in 1847 took place in 1847. Rather they took place at some point between 1833 and 1845 (or possibly 1846).
The attached .pdf transcribes all marriages from Vol. A and sorts them by page number from page 1 to page 165. Additionally, purported dates of at least 100 of the "lost" marriages are available from another source,[4] According to the description on Ancestry,"Loose bonds between 1834 and 1846 were extracted at the county courthouse. By placing the marriages in the order in which they appear to have been recorded, you can generally narrow marriage dates to a one or two year range.
