NOTES:
1. The Permanent ID (PID) provides a page anchor point for the table row.It consists of two parts: the first part is the unique ID on the Wikitree page that serves as the anchor point and the second part is the link to the specific census record at Familysearch.org that will provide the capability of viewing the actual census page image for that individual. Note: that Familysearch requires a userid (Free) to access records within their systems.
2. The Page refers to the page # of the census record in the original census file. These page numbers are either stamped or handwritten somewhere on the page.
3. The Line refers to the line number on the page of the census. The number of lines per page for this census year is variable as the federal government did not provide pre-printed census forms of a uniform size.[2]
4. Please note that the original census records do not contain this record type column; it is an additional element used to facilitate data presentation on these Wikitree pages.
The Rec column refers to the record type. Since the 1820 US census line is too long to detail all columns on Wikitree pages, the line is segmented into 7 blocks labeled A thru G. Each one of these blocks contains a number of columns (4 or 5 or 6) with count data as follows:
- A: Free White Males
- B: Free White Females
- C: Miscellaneous Counts
- D: Slaves - Males
- E: Slaves - Females
- F: Free Colored Persons - Males
- G: Free Colored Persons - Females
Since not all blocks are populated on the original census line, any block with empty counts for the entire block will be omitted from this transcription. For example, if there are not counts for Slaves (males and/or females), blocks D and/or E will not be included. So the records for that household might only include A, B, C, and possibly F and G, but not D nor E.
There were no slaves (male or female) enumerated in Montgomery County for the 1820 US Census.
5. The first name of the head of household.
6. The surname of the head of household. This field can also be used to link to the individual WikiTree profile of the individual, if the profile exists and has been linked to this table.
Columns 7 thru 12 are the count values for the specific record type and question.
- A cell with a value of "." means the census record did not include a count for that category. This makes the table easier to view, rather than using a value of 0.
- A cell with a value of "-" means the that category and count field is not applicable. This serves to indicate to the viewer that the table cell intentionally does not contain a count value.
