Milling was the first permanent industry in Lancaster. Also in 1811 Ahaz Alien built a grist mill on Cayuga Creek near the creek's present intersection with Lake Ave.
It was built in 1811, just a few years after the original settler of the community laid the ground work for the development of the Village. It was located at the intersection of present-day Broadway and Cayuga Creek. It remained until 1947 when it was demolished during the course of the Cayuga Creek Flood Control project.
