About the Moore Y DNA Project

This project is being created to supplement both, the BY3364 and Subclades Y DNA Project, and the Moore Y DNA Project, which are accessible through FTDNA (Family Tree DNA), and administered by... me... Robert Moore. Note that the focus here is solely on the one syllable variations of Moore, such as Mure, Muir, Mohr, Moor, etc. Stay tuned as this page will be updated. Thanks!

In the meantime, you can see my BY3368 Project, which focuses on the Mure/Muir/Moore lines that are rooted in SW Scotland (Ayrshire, Renfrewshire, Lanarkshire, Glasgow, etc).

What is Y DNA?

Many times, when mentioning Y DNA, folks misunderstand Y DNA results as the same as those received from Ancestry, 23andMe, etc. This is incorrect. Instead, Y DNA is very specific... it is the DNA that is passed solely from fathers to sons over the lifespan of humanity. Maternal DNA has no impact on Y DNA. Additionally, Y DNA tests can only be taken by males, as females do not carry the Y (except in extremely rare situations). As Y is a focus on a specific line of males with a surname (or variant) that has been passed down for centuries (roughly 900 years), it can be quite revealing, taking one even deeper into origins of their Y, beyond the surname and into ancient history (perhaps, for example, you learn you are one of the five groups that tend to reflect Irish origins... or, perhaps reveal a possible European tribal connection from the Iron Age).

In some instances, NPE's (non-paternal events) are realized. In this case, the surname you hold may not be the surname of an ancestor. This occurs through illegitimate births, unrecorded adoptions, and etc.
