Moreauvia

Moreauvia was a large Victorian era country house designed by the prominent colonial architect Benjamin Backhouse, built in 1876 for John and Margaret Yates (Beatty) Palmer on a 320 acre (129 Ha) grant of Crown land at Orton Park just south of Bathurst in New South Wales. Margaret's grandmother was Maria (Moreau) Beatty, the granddaughter of an early eighteenth century Huguenot emigrant, Jaques Philippes Moreau. Following on from the passing of John Palmer in 1884, and a visit to Britain by Margaret and one of her daughters, Florence, later to become the wife of Charles Woodford, Moreauvia was put on the market for let or sale during the depression years of the 1890s. However, it appears the property was not sold until 1909. From about 1927 to 1931 it was being advertised as a guest house. The house was largely destroyed by fire in the 1980's, and is no longer heritage listed.
