Group Efforts Fail to Keep Hospital Open
Safford, August 9 — The Morris-Squibb Hospital will close Tuesday after 25 years’ operation in this Graham community. A committee failed to find a way to keep the institution open. The privately owned hospital is being closed because two sisters are tired, Mrs. H.W. Squibb and Mrs. Antionette Behrens have operated the 37-bed institution together since the death of Harry W. Squibb in 1932. The hospital was founded 25 years ago by Drs. Squibb and J.W. Morris. In 1932, a gas explosion at the Horseshoe Cafe put many victims in the Morris-Squibb Hospital. The permeation of the gas filled Dr. Squibb’s lungs and he died shortly after treating the victims. It was then that Mrs. Behrens came from St. Louis to assist her sister and Dr. Morris in running the hospital. Since 1932 they have been trying to make disposition of the institution. In the meantime, they continued to serve residents of the area. But the strain of 24-hour devotion to duty has become too great, the sisters said. “We’re more than just a little tired,” said Mrs. Behrens.
