William Moses Samples

. I will be adding other supporting information as I find it.

John C. Samples to Louise Wiedeman, Personal Correspondence-- John C. Samples; "Jack moved his family to Wolf County, Kentucky about 1858. My name is John Chapman (my mother's maden name) Samples. Born September 1, 1933, at Miller's Creek, Kentucky. My Father was Floyd Byrd Samples, born in the same community in 1900. His father was William Moses Samples who was born in 1857 in Virginia--his father was Andrew Jackson Samples born in 1833 (he was born Simeon Jackson Hunt, Jr. and changed his name in 1851) his father was, obviously, Simeon Jackson Hunt, Sr. His Mother was Polly Samples--thus the last name of Samples. Polly's sister Delilah was married to Simeon Jackson Hunt, Sr. and he had about eight children by each sister. It is doubtful that he ever married Polly, although, as I told you, some descendant who has become a Mormon has had a Mormon record of their marriage created.
"I have included a memorial service program for Simeon Jackson Hunt, Sr. In 1984 a monument was placed on his grave for his Civil War service. "Polly Samples was born in 1808 (I was off considerably on this date) and you can see on the program that she was the daughter of a William Samples and Nancy Wilson.
The only note I found on the origin of this William Samples says that "he drifted (into this area) out of Prince William County>" I know he did operate a grocery store and that he had several other children. Somewhere I have the date of his birth--I think--not sure. Anyhow, he would've been born between 1750-1780--apparently in Prince William County."

Research Notes by William Foster

I went through all of Augusta County records (not alphabetical) on Binns for 1782 A, 1782 B, and 1783 and did not see any surname Samples. I also sorted the 1790 A, 1790 B, 1790 C, 1795 A, and 1795 B which are alphabetical by first letter and did not see any Samples.

Need to tie in Phoebe Samples Curry of Rockingham County to her father who appears to be a Robert Samples with witness Moses Samples.

Look like Jane is Solved: https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/9176/004087714_00454/3239780 Jane Roberson is married to James Roberson and is daughter of Elendar Shanks.

It could also be that for granddaughter Ruth Roberts, this is her married name. For example, maybe Jane Samples Campbell is mother of Ruth who married a Mr. Roberts?
