There were 42 men in the pit when the explosion happened, followed by a fire. 26 people were killed, with another 9 severely burnt in the consequent fire, 2 of whom died a few days later. Many of the dead were from the same families; all were residents of Mostyn. The two explosions the previous year had claimed more than 50 lives.
