About the Project

... ... ... is a member of the Motz Name Study Project.

The Motz Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Motz / Moats / Motes surnames. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for people with an interest in the Motz surname or the Moats and Motes variants.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual research pages focus on particular areas of research and provide a space for comments, discussion and collaboration. They can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (German Motz's), by time period (18th Century Motz's), or by topic (Motz Brick Walls, DNA, Occupations or Statistics). These focus areas may include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

How to Join

To join the Motz Name Study, just add your name and area of interest to the Membership list below. There is a list of tasks and research pages below, so there are lots of ways to contribute to the name study. If there is a specific research page that fits your interests, please post an introductory comment on the specific research page, and dive in!

Brick Walls - Ancestor Research

Research and create sourced ancestor profiles to break down Motz "brick walls". For the purposes of this study, a "brick wall" is defined as a profile that does not have a connected father profile. Brick walls are also sometimes referred to as EKA (Earliest Known Ancestor), or Founder or Head of Line or Lineage. See Motz ONS Brick Walls for a list of known Motz brick wall profiles.

When working on brick walls for this name study you can:

Descendancy Research

Descendancy research is especially helpful when focused on the earliest known profile of a yDNA tester because the yDNA connection will appear on every male descendant of that ancestor.

Connecting Profiles

Add new profiles for all the "Unconnected" Motz/Moats/Motes profiles in order to connect them to the global tree. (For information on connecting profiles, see the Connectors Project.)

A profile is said to be "Unconnected" if it is not connected to the global WikiTree by ancestry, descent or marriage. A profile can be connected to a number of profiles and still be considered "unconnected" to the global tree. An unconnected profile might not be a brick wall, and a brick wall profile might not be unconnected. You can connect Motz profiles to the global tree by adding profiles for ancestors, descendants, and spouses.

A profile that is "connected" will display a "Bacon box" (Are you six degrees from Kevin Bacon? lol) at the bottom of the profile, highlighting the degrees of connection to various individuals, like this:
