Work in progress - photographing, collecting and organizing graves at cemetery.
California played a surprisingly important role in the Civil War, with contributions of both men and materials, and after the war, large numbers of veterans, both Union and Confederate, emigrated West.
During Pasadena's formative years, Civil War veterans were everywhere. Over 1100 veterans settled in the Pasadena and nearly 800 are buried at Mountain View Cemetery. They owned stores and photo studios. They were shoemakers, constables, and orchardists. They were politicians and officials at all levels of government. They were real estate brokers and land investors. They helped build a town, and then a city.
From the founding of The California Colony of Indiana (early settlement of Indiana natives) in 1874 to the death of the last local Civil War veteran in 1946, the Civil War veterans were an integral part of the community.
