The town of Wolfville had no written history in 1980, and realization of the need led the Wolfville Historical Society to provide one. In 1966, the town had commissioned Dr. Watson Kirkconnell, Dr. B.C. Silver, and Mrs. Elsie Findlay to procure information about century-old houses in the community. Drs. Kirkconnell and Silver compiled the material, and a booklet on Historic Homes was published in 1967. Dr. Kirkconnell also wrote The Streets of Wolfville, 1650-1970.

The Society agreed in 1979 to consider publishing a pictorial record of Wolfville, and appointed Patricia Townsend and James D. Davison who learned that Lois Hill, recent Acadia graduate, ahd received a Canada Works Program grant for a similar project. Hill, Heather Leigh, and James Tillotson researched and wrote for a year Their work was then passed in 1980 to Davison who had been preparing stories about Wolfville.

The book does not provide citations, but is clearly well researched.
