Music Groups and Bands

Music Groups and Bands

Welcome to Bandspace

This is a page where individual members of bands can be indexed so you can jump between different band members as easily as you can jump between connected family members. It should make it easier to browse and find people of interest or with connections to each other. It is also a prompt for musicians who don't have profiles yet that can be researched and added to Wikitree.

For editable profiles, the band header (eg Space:Music_Groups_and_Bands#The_Beatles) can be hyperlinked from the profile. For private listed profiles the bandspace link can be put in the comments.

There is no reason why every band cannot eventually have its own Freespace page (if someone wants to build one) but until they start appearing and getting linked together with band member profiles, this is a workable placeholder for bands without their own pages.

The current order isn't completely arbitrary, The Weavers is the oldest band where all the members have been linked, the next hundred or so are in the order they had number 1 records in the UK up to 1980, and the next few dozen are the best-selling bands in history that didn't have a UK number 1 before 1981. After that the order becomes somewhat arbitrary! The reason there are more UK bands at the top is simply because this page started life as a by-product of the UK Number 1s index. (If anyone does want to alphabetize the order, you have my blessing).

Hyperlinks direct to artists names should only be used where they have Wikitree profiles. If they have no profile but they are on Wikipedia, then add (wiki) with a hyperlink, so we can easily see who needs a profile. If they have a profile you should also state their connection status - connected, N/C or unlisted (living people with private profiles). I have been putting N/C in bold for deceased people with profiles that need connecting

Please feel free to edit, make corrections, add bands, band members and associated figures, add links to profiles, add information about bands, link to freespace band pages and research, connect and build profiles for any unprofiled musician listed! This is an ongoing project and there will always be bands that haven't been added yet.

Dedicated Freespace pages exist for the following bands:

Cliff Richard and The Shadows/Drifters

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shadows

From London, England. Formed as The Drifters but ran into legal conflicts with the American band of the same name, so switched to Shadows after their first big hit. While they were often paired with Cliff Richard in the 50s and 60s, they were very much their own band and released their own singles and albums at the same time as recording with Cliff, and continued doing so well into the 2000s (despite a short-lived disbandment in 1968).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shadows

Cliff and the Shadows had hits. The Shadows on their own had hits (invariably instrumentals). Jet Harris and Tony Meehan had a hit of their own. Cliff later had hits of his own, without the Shadows. Both Cliff and The Shadows separately competed in the Eurovision Song Contest. Hank Marvin released solo work and also formed a group with Bruce Welch and John Farrar (of The Strangers).

In 1963, 5 of the first 6 records to hit Number 1 were by Cliff and the Shadows, the Shadows or Jet Harris/Tony Meehan. The only record to interrupt the run was The Wayward Wind by Frank Ifield.
