As told to H V Currie by her 1st Cousin once removed Mrs. Wrench .
"My half Aunt Mary Bettina Georgiana( daughter of Col. John Kirke of Retford & Markham by his 2nd wife Maria Almond) was born on 28th Jan 1824 & married May 1st 1845 Chas Thorold JP of Wlehma, 2nd son of Samuel T of W., grand son of Sir John T of Syston born June 28 1821. They were married at Markham & I was Bridesmaid being then in my 14th year.
A bunch of violets was on every plate at the wedding breakfast. Mary was devoted to flowers, was v musical playing Piano & Harp, always delighted to play duets with me & the last time she was at Park Lodge (the Wrench's home) hunted out some old music & made me play with her which I thoroughly enjoyed.
She was remarkably good tempered always ready to do a kindness - was full of fun & good anecdotes was an early riser & fond of walking after looking for mushrooms in the v early morning!!
As she & I were so neary of an age we had many tastes in common such as birdsnesting & archery! Things the the present generation do not care for so much.
Mary always sent a large mistletoe to Baslow for Xmas until she killed her apple tree by growing so much on it. We miss that box of mistletoe yet. "
