PIP Voyager Goals
Three Main Points
- Well-sourced: All facts presented in the profile should be accompanied by reliable sources.
- Well-written: The text portion of the profile should be genealogical in nature and enjoyable to read.
- Well-structured: The text portion of the profile should be structured in a way that makes it easy to read and easy to find information, as well as visually appealing. Large amounts of text about a place, event, etc. should be split off into a free-space page.
Templates
So here's a template that you may have seenThe template Template:Abc template breaks down as follows: {{ denotes start of template abc is the name of the template. | is a delimiter between the name and any argument. arg is an argument. }} denotes end of the template
The delimiter and 0 or more arguments might be optional, depending on the template. Now let's take that to a more concrete example Find A Grave: Memorial #70656084
This is the template for memorial 70656084 at FindAGrave. The software will do automagical to convert this to the full clickable link to the URL for the grave memorial (e.g., https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/70656084/william-henry-studebaker)
If you are still with me, you might also have a FindAGrave template using the sameas argument Find A Grave: Memorial #69003531
This says that the memorial is not for the person in the profile. The example above is Elsie on the profile for Ira Draper.
Now we have a similar pattern for the templates used for the links to FamilySearch. I don't know if you remember the whole bruhaha a few months ago when FamilySearch changed their URL (or maybe it was the links provided in their Cite this Source). Anyway, if we use the template then the software can take care of this for us.
There are two templates that we want to use for FamilySearch. The first is for a record, such as the census records. It will look like: FamilySearch Record: MXXF-WSG
So in this case, "FamilySearch Record" is the name of the template, and MXXF-WSG is the argument. The argument is the record id, which you can get from the URL for the record (its at the end after the last :) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MXXF-WSG. When you use this template in your source citation then the citation will have a link to the record. To use this, you would replace the entire lines https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MXXF-WSG with FamilySearch Record: MXXF-WSG.
Try this with William's family search records.
The other template we want to use for FamilySearch is the one that will take you to the FamilySearch profile, which is simply FamilySearch Person: FS-ID
where FS-ID is the family search id. If you go to the FamilySearch profile you will see the ID at the top. If you then click on it, it will copy this for you. So for William I did this and got GJCC-PHC. Now to include this in the profile, after the == Sources == and lines add a line that says See Also: then after that add the line for the FamilySearch profile. You can see how I did this for https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Toepelt-15
