Surnames/tags: Myers Myres
Hello,
I would like to welcome descendants of the Myers family to our one name study group. Please come & help us organize this effort. My focus presently is the Myers families from Switzerland and Germany; also the Myers families that migrated to America, particularly Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. We are also looking to find the migration pattern from this particular family group. Please contact the project leader Kim Myers or post a comment to the right. If you have any questions, just ask. Thanks!
As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Myers), by time period (18th Century Myers), or by topic (Myers DNA, Myers Occupations, Myers Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.
Also see the related surnames and surname variants.
Myers Name Origin
English (mainly Yorkshire): patronymic from Mayer 1, i.e. ‘son of the mayor’. English: patronymic from mire ‘physician’ (see Myer 1). Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Midhir, probably a variant of Ó Meidhir ‘mayor’ (see Mayer 1).

Goals
- This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about one surname and the variants of that name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect.
- Document and correctly connect all Myers lines on Wikitree
- Add Myers DNA results to help confirm connections
- Create a meaningful bio for each profile so that it represents a person's life
- Develop a reference library specifically for Myers genealogy research
What You Can Do?
- Add the category or template Myers to all of the Myers profiles which you manage. [If you add the template it will automatically add the category.]
- Make sure the Myers profiles that you manage have good sources and a biography
- Ask questions in G2G if you need genealogy help
- Post comments in the boxes on this page to share Myers Genealogy information
- Link Myers Space Pages to this Project Page.
- If you are interested in a new “Myers” category [e.g. Myers from a particular location, etc.] let your leader know.

Tasks
If you've put up all of the Myers's in your family (or at least all the ones you've found so far), and are looking for something else to do, here are some tasks that you might be willing to help with:
- Biographies:
- We need to make sure that each Myers on WikiTree has a narrative biography containing all the genealogically relevant facts about them (birth, marriage, and death at the very least). For information on biographies, see the Biographies help page.
- Categories:
- We need to make sure that each Myers on WikiTree has the appropriate categories applied to their profile. For information on categories, see the Categorization help page and the Categorization Project.
- Subcategories:
- Need to create subcategory for state, region, etc
- Coats of Arms:
- It would be great if we could find (or create) well-rendered, but public domain, images of the various Myers coats of arms listed in Burke's General Armory, to add to the profiles of those people who have the right to bear each of them.
- Progress: not started
- It would be great if we could find (or create) well-rendered, but public domain, images of the various Myers coats of arms listed in Burke's General Armory, to add to the profiles of those people who have the right to bear each of them.
- Connecting:
- We need to connect all the Unconnected Myers profiles on WikiTree. (This can count towards the Connectors Challenge if you're feeling competitive.) For information on connecting profiles, see the Connectors Project.
- Progress: profiles = %
- We need to connect all the Unconnected Myers profiles on WikiTree. (This can count towards the Connectors Challenge if you're feeling competitive.) For information on connecting profiles, see the Connectors Project.
- Merging:
- We need to merge any duplicate profiles for the same person into one profile for that person. For information on merging profiles, see the Merging help page.
- Sourcing:
- We need to have sources for all the profiles on WikiTree. Specifically, we need at least one (and preferably more) sources added for all the Unsourced Myers profiles on WikiTree. (This can count towards the Sourcerers Challenge if you're feeling competitive.) For information on sourcing profiles, see the Sources help page and the Sourcerers Project.
Research Pages
Here are some of the current research pages included in the study. I'll be working on them, and could use your help!

My mother's maiden name is Myers. Her father's 3rd great-grandfather Peter Myers moved from Red Hook, New York in the mid 18th century and settled near Scranton, Pennsylvania. Ultimately they trace to Rohrbach, Germany, having emigrated sometime in the early 18th century to work for the Dutch. As far as I can tell Peter was the one who changed the spelling of the family name from Meyer (his father was Anthony Meyer) to Myers.

My Myers Family lived in Orwell, Oswego, and Auburn, New York. My 3rd Great Grandfather's name was Josiah Myers, and he immigrated to America from Holland, Reusel-de Meriden, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands, along with his Father Josiah Myers Sr, right before the Revolutionary war IN 1776.

I have tested my Y-DNA through 2 different companies, as well as my mtDNA, and my autosomal DNA through 4 or 5 companies. My DNA is out there for matching, but it needs way more test subjects than are currently testing. Please do your part so we can cut through some of the volume and have solid facts to work with. Thanks
