NELSON GROUP REPOSITORY

The goal of this project is to save the many years of Nelson research begun in the 1970s by a group of Nelson "cousins." Originally created to find the parents of Ross Nelson c1775-1842 of Jackson Co., Ohio. It has expanded to include other Nelson families.

U.S. Census for Nelson's in Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio, 1790

• The 1790 census lists 370 heads of households with the surname of Nelson. A head of household was usually male, yet some females were named in that role. The total number of persons counted with the Nelson surname was 1,762, with thirty-seven of those families living in Virginia.

Profile of Asa H Owen names his mother Jane Nelson Owen: Jane Nelson Owen is the daughter of Joseph Nelson. [Since she was born in Scott Co KY in 1787, Joseph had arrived in the area by then. ] Excerpt: ASA H. OWEN, farmer, P. O. Skinnersburg, whose portrait appears in this work, was born in Scott County, August 21, 1812, in the same house he now lives in. His father, Thos. Owen, was a farmer by occupation. He was born in Virginia, Aug. 6, 1768; he emigrated to Covington, Kentucky, in the year 1800; in 1801 removed to Franklin County, and in 1805 removed to Scott County, and settled on the same farm and in the same house occupied by our subject, where he died June 7, 1849. His wife, Jane (Nelson), and mother of our subject, was born in Scott County, May 12, 1787, and died Feb. 5, 1860. Of the three children born to them, Asa H., our subject, was the youngest child. His education was limited to such as the common schools of his native county afforded in his day.

NOTE: Asa H Owen was son of Jane Nelson Owen. Jane was the daughter of Joseph Nelson.
