Find New Zealand Notables

Further down this page, list any New Zealand Notables who:

  • need a profile or
  • need the profile managed by the New Zealand Project because they are recent notables and orphaned or
  • are living notables whom the NZ Project should manage or
  • are private living profiles whom the NZ Project should co-manage
  1. Add DONE or a note next to wiki link when the task has been completed.
  2. Don't forget to add the Notables Sticker {{Notables Sticker|New Zealand, Notables}} and relevant categories.

Recently Deceased Notables

  • Create the profile if the person meets the Wikipedia Standard for Notability
  • The New Zealand Project does not need to manage the profile if you are willing to do it yourself
  • Be aware of the guidelines on Recently Deceased Strangers. Current newspaper obituaries and articles may need to be used tactfully

Living Notables

  • Be sure to check the rules on Living Notables
  • Check there is at least a Wikipedia page which mentions at least one nuclear family member and a Wikipedia page in at least 3 languages
  • If you think any living person without a Wikipedia page should have a profile made, please ask in the Discord Kiwi Crew server or in G2G
  1. Add the {{New Zealand}} Project Box. This can also be categorised by location. {{New Zealand|region=Otago|place=Oamaru}}
  2. Add wt-new-zealand-project@googlegroups.com as Profile Manager if the profile privacy is not Open. This does not mean you need to delete yourself as Manager, but you can.
    1. Click the Privacy tab on the notable profile.
    2. In the Add to Trusted List section, enter wt-new-zealand-project@googlegroups.com and press ADD THIS PERSON.
    3. In the Trusted List section, select the link for wt-new-zealand-project@googlegroups.com to "Add as Manager."

Defining a NZ Notable

Many NZ notables, especially long deceased New Zealanders, do not have Wikipedia entries. The NZ Project has clarified the criteria for NZ notability based on the Wikipedia notability criteria, therefore worthy of a notable sticker.

  1. People are presumed notable if they have received significant coverage in multiple published secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject.
  2. The person has received a well-known and significant award or honor, or has been nominated for such an award several times; e.g. a royal honour such as an MBE or ONZ or
  3. The person has made a widely recognized contribution that is part of the enduring historical record in a specific field; or
  4. The person has an entry in a country's standard national biographical dictionary (e.g. the Dictionary of National Biography) that is Te Ara - The Encyclopaeda of New Zealand

However, there are New Zealanders who do not fit these categories, but many New Zealanders would consider them notable. If a WikiTree member would like a New Zealander to be considered "notable" and therefore have a notable sticker, please contact either Melanie Paul or Fiona McMichael. The suggested person will be discussed in the Kiwi Crew Discord server - you are welcome to join that discussion - and a decision will be made. The profile will be tagged "The NZ Project considers that X meets the Wikipedia criteria for notability.” and the Notable sticker will be added.
