This is a proposal for the categorization of ships and voyages and for the consistent format for naming a voyage landing category.

Background

The current position with the ship voyage landing categories is that some are named according to arrival date, some according to sailing date and some are named with a year. It is not clear from the category name if it is year of sailing or arrival. We want to name all categories consistently, so there is no confusion with whether it is a sailing or arrival year. There is currently no approved format for the landing category.

In many databases used for research, immigrant ships are classified by arrival date , therefore the preference for the voyage landing category is the format [[Category:Ship Name, arrived DD Month YYYY]] , the month as a word, but using the standard 3 letter abbreviations. eg. [[Category:Lady Juliana, arrived 3 Jun 1790]].
If the exact day of the month is unknown, the month and year would be used, or just the arrival year if that is all that is known. [[Category:Ship Name, arrived Month YYYY]] or [[Category:Ship Name, arrived YYYY]].

The "Arrived" date would be for the final arrival port of that country, where there were multiple ports of call, within that country.

Proposal

Shipping Categories

. The "Pink" category, the landing category, will be for a single voyage, and the only one that should have individual profiles added. To use the format [[Category:Lady Juliana, arrived 3 Jun 1790]].

All voyage landing categories for a particular ship, will be nested under the category for the Ship Name (Launch Year) eg. [[Category:Lady Juliana (1777)]].

The "Arrived" date would be for the final arrival port of that country, where there were multiple ports of call, within that country.

All voyage landing categories should, ideally, include sailing date, and arrival dates for all ports of call, in the category content, to enable users to identify the correct voyage.

All voyage landing categories should have this as a parent category: [[Category:Ship Name (Launch Year)]]

If the sailing date is known, voyage landing categories can have [[Category:Ship Name, sailed DD Month YYYY]] as a parent category.

Voyage landing categories may have other parent categories, according to regional project category structures.

Example, Lady Juliana

Categories on the right hand side are specific to Australia.
