About the Project

The Nass Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Nass name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Nass name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Nasses), by time period (18th Century Nasses), or by topic (Nass DNA, Nass Occupations, Nass Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Also see the related surnames and surname variants.

Sophia (Nuss) Bechtoldt (1843-1926), a 19th century immigrant to the US from Hesse, was my gr-gr-grandmother. I have not done a great deal of research on her family (just learning to deal with German language records), but adding my name here in case I can, at some point, add any value to the study. She spelled her name Nuss, but it appears in the German records with various spellings, mostly Nuß and Naß.

There appear to be a number of German Nass families in Iowa mid-19th century. Has anyone researched them for a common ancestor?

Not yet, but perhaps this is something that interests you.

This project is new and there is much to do.

Hello,

This is my mother's maiden name. From my research, it was adopted by my 2x great grandfather, Halvor "Halfward" Nas (Nass), upon arrival to the US in 1892. From what I have inferred, it is drawn from his homeland: Stromsnas, Stugun Parish, Jamtland, Sweden.

I look forward to contributing as I am able.
