Nathaniel J. Alston Plantation

near Pittsboro Nathaniel Jones Alston (1810-1885)

D. Williams research List of Slaves included[1]

Enslaved

Many, if not all of those enslaved at the Alston Plantation can be identified by name, as Nathaniel himself kept records, at least of the births, which are detailed below.[2] We also know, from census records, that over half of the children born to enslaved mothers were not fathered by enslaved men. According to the research done by descendant and filmmaker Mackey Alston, Nathaniel and his wife never had any children together, as she did not have a strong constitution. The planter, therefore, did his planting elsewhere.[3]
