This letter was written to Buena Belle White of Fairfield, Texas, (older sister of Nelma Gene) on Sunday afternoon of July 25, 1943, about 2 days before Nelma Gene's death. My mom was only 6 weeks old at the time. After Aunt Buena Belle died, a cousin was cleaning out her house and asked if mom wanted the letter so she she it to her. (Intro written by Lori Dosser).
When you get a little daughter you will understand fully why I had waited so long to write you. She keeps me stepping, but I enjoy it too much to gripe about it. I wish you could see her -- she's so sweet and she looks so well. She weighs 8 1/2 lbs now and it seems that she's gaining more everyday. Why don't you take off and come to see her.
I suppose you have heard about your other little "White" neice that weighs 4 lbs. 3 oz. She is a pitiful looking little thing because she is so skinny. Of course I don't want W.A. & Imogene to know I said that. She will look lots better when she fills out. Newell Ray is crazy about her but he takes her bottle when he gets a chance. He likes Nelma Louise too and he can't stand to hear them cry. He's certainly going to be a bad kid if they don't hurry and make him mind. He does just what he pleases.
Say are clothes as high as everything down there as they are here. I wonder if you could find me a couple of dresses something on the order of your brown seersucker pretty reasonable. They don't have to be seersucker, but something that opens down the front. I had to pay 6.00 for a gingham that doesn't look so good so that make any nicer dress run all the way to from $10 to 15.00 dollars. I would like to have a pretty nice one that could be worn this winter and one that would do for knock about if
you think you prices are reasonable. I don't know about the size because it depends on the make of the dress. I suppose what you wear would be O.K. for one. Let me know if you can get them for me and I'll send you the money when I get my next check (1st). And if you can find any baby dresses or gowns of any kind from 6 mo. or 1 yr. please get me some. We can't buy any here and I would like to get some more in case what she has wears out too soon. You should see all her things. She has so many pretty things and $10.00 in her bank that different ones have given her. I'm going to use that for her winter wardrobe.
Where's (illegible)? I guess you are missing him lots or is Someone Taking His Place!
Jim and I are fine and he's home today. I'm about to run out of paper.
Note from Lori: The letter was typed as is including mistakes. It was written on U.S. Army Air Forces, Ellington Field, Texas stationery.
