In gold rush days, Hatters Terrace, on the south bank of Nelson Creek was the name of the town now called Nelson Creek. Try Again Terrace was on the north bank, immediately east of Hatters Terrace as can be seen centre left in this May 1877 diagram of progess made in building the Hochstetter Lake (Government) Water-race.

Try Again Terrace

History People interred in the Try Again Terrace informal cemetery were later buried in the Nelson Creek / Ngahere cemetery. During the gold rush days, prospectors wanted to mine the land that was being used as a cemetery. The Nelson Creek / Ngahere Cemetery was established and the bodies from the informal Try Again cemetery were moved there. The 'Grey River Argus' has articles about the Grey County Council calling for tenders to exhume and reinter the bodies, from 1886 to 1887.

By May 1868, the 'Grey River Argus' Correspondent reported that the principle diggings at Nelson Creek were at Try Again Terrace, "dancing saloons, billiard rooms and shanties innumerable, with the usual ruction caused by their presence, occupy the place, where, a short twelvemonth ago, 'stillness reigned around'.." It is interesting to note that the diggers at Try Again Terrace were newcomers, apparently not those whose relatives had been buried there.

Try Again Terrace Cemetery
A resident of Hatters, Nelson Creek wrote, 13 November 1886, that burials had been made twenty years previously in unconsecrated ground at Try Again Terrace out of necessity. He wanted his relatives to be re interred at the consecrated Ahaura Cemetery not "in that unenclosed, unsecured piece of bush-land - open to all the vagrant cattle in the district - and known as the Nelson Creek Cemetery".
