"The Nelson Family Record from Mid-Seventeen Hundreds to October - 1959," Compiled by W A Abercrombie.

William Alexander Abercrombie (1880 - 1960) was an accountant and amateur genealogist, who compiled his wife's family tree and maintained it over a period of many years. It exists in at least two versions, distributed as copies of typescript to family members. The title page of the October, 1959 version reads:

"IN MEMORY OF EDNA NELSON ABERCROMBIE

BORN DECEMBER 25, 1881 MARRIED JUNE 7, 1905 DIED JULY 1 1954

Compiled by W. A. Abercrombie

Information received from so many members of the Nelson family. Credit may be given to every adult member, Postmasters, Secretaries of Chambers of Commerce, telephone directories of many cities and by long distance phone.

We will mention that a great granddaughter of Simpson Nelson, Mrs. Mariette Nelson Harrell of Farmerville, Louisiana had these mimeograph copies made in her office, some of the work being done without charge."

The March, 1958 version's title page includes the dedication, "A Loving Wife and Mother, a Loyal Friend, a True Christian." It also acknowledges by name some of Mr Abercrombie's informants: Mrs Ella Nelson Aiken, Mrs Alice Bird Lawless, Mrs Marjorie Nelson Armstrong, Miss Eloise Whitlow Moroney, Mrs Alice Nelson Brown, Mrs Crecy Moore Stephens, Mr Patrick J Fallon, Mrs Rose O'Connor Fourment, Mr Wallace Tardy, and Mr and Mrs Herbert E Tardy.

The majority of The Nelson Family Record comprises a detailing listing of the descendants of Elisha Nelson (1795 - 1865), son of Elisha (1755 - 1829) with shorter sections covering the families of Amos 'Stump' Elliott (1766 - ) and Henry C Brasher (1771 - 1852).

As indicated by the acknowledgments, Mr Abercrombie collected much of his data through correspondence and telephone conversations with living relatives. He also relied on family bibles (probably those later compiled in Old Southern Bible Records[1]) , cemeteries, and Revolutionary War pension records, as transcribed in his text.

Research to verify the information in this document has revealed relatively few errors. While it may lack the scholarly rigor demanded of genealogical reference works, it serves as a valuable and overall reliable starting point for Nelson, Elliott, and Brasher investigators.
