Government

Before creation of Nevada Territory, the area was part of western Utah Territory known as Washoe. The people wanted to be separated due to animosity between non-Mormon
miners in Nevada and Mormons from the rest of the Utah Territory. The"Northwest Ordinance of 1787" allowed a state to be admitted, "Provided the constitution and government are formed, republican, and conform with the general interest of the government, then an admission was allowed even if the free colonists in the State are less than sixty thousand.”

Territory of Nevada was an incorporated territory of the US March 2, 1861, until October 31, 1864, when it was admitted to the Union as the 36th State of Nevada. It telegraphed its Constitution to US Congress days before presidential election giving its 3 electoral votes. President J. Buchanan had signed into law establishing Territory of Nevada from a portion of the Utah Territory. Carson City was selected as capital. Nevada was rushed into statehood early due to the impending Civil War. October 31, 1864, Lincoln signed the act to make Nevada (36th state). The Nevada constitution was patterned after California's state constitution with 39 members of constitutional convention having experience. NOTE: convention president J. [1] There was structure for Governor, Congress having Assembly and Senate, and Supreme Court.

  • 1941 - World War II - Army Air Field, Nevada, was a training base for bomber pilots, including the crew of the Enola Gay. The Enola Gay was stationed here until June 1945.

I believe the Enola Gay was at Wendover, Utah, not Nevada. Wendover is on the Nevada/Utah border, on the Utah side.
