Users of this Structure

The following was my journey Devlin-670 14:27, 16 October 2024 (UTC) and what I think we need

  • New to Wikitree and Irish Sources
    • Create a getting started page with the most used sources
  • Sur-Name research (one name study, Clan etc,)
  • Location research
  • Religion research
  • Date range research
  • After I did a detailed research on what was in the source,I needed a quick reference to that source
    • Detailed writeup on the source, what is in it, how to ref it, and different places to find it. This could include many sources like Alans format or single format like Rick P.
    • Quick reference Page of the most used sources

Hi Rich et al,

I am broadly supportive. For example, I agree that it is probably best to group historical sources within date range rather than mix everything together.

If the main grouping of sources is to come through categories, then what will fall under the categories? If we go for the system of having one page per source (which I do not favour) then I find it easy to see how the category system would work. For example

  • A biography on a named Irish Quaker family would be categorised under sources by surname and under Irish Quaker sources
  • The excellent book 'Immigration of the Irish Quakers into Pennsylvania' would be categorised under whatever category we would have for diaspora sources and Irish Quaker Sources
  • etc

Using a system of source pages, we would (will?) be left with some inevitable duplication.

After a very little bit of thinking (definitely not a final set of proposals) I have the following contribution on a structure.

  • Getting started (even if it risks duplicating stuff elsewhere this should be prominent)
  • How to guides, bibliographies etc
  • Repositories and catalogues (see for example Irish Quaker sources and resources - General resources as a starting point)
  • People and place names
  • Irish/International genealogical sites
  • Maps and gazeteers (see Historical Maps and Gazetteers of Ireland as a starting point)
  • Older Irish sources by date range
  • Sources by province/county etc
  • Sources by category (for more recent period)
    • Biographies and genealogies (sub headings peerage, landed gentry etc, collective biographies (eg DIB), biographies/genealogies by group, biographies/genealogies by surname etc, etc ...)
    • Birth, marriage, death & cemetry/gravestone records (civil and religious - inevitably duplication/triplication with religious and geographical headings)
    • Census and similar records
    • Wills, land & property records (see for example Irish Quaker sources and resources - Land records, legal records, deeds and wills as a starting point); could add tax records in here as many relate to land or inheritance
    • Immigration, emigration and travel records
    • Military records
    • Newspapers (see for example Irish Quaker sources and resources - Newspapers and journals as a starting point); needs updating for growth of Newspapers.com
    • Specific groups (members of different religions, scots Irish, Palatines, etc)
    • Specific occupations (architects, doctors, etc)
    • Genealogical, historical and academic journals (see for example Irish Quaker sources and resources - Historical and academic journals as a starting point); need to decide what to do about individual journal articles - I have an appendix for them for Quakers; there would obviously the thousands for all Ireland, but a directory of them would be valuable
    • Histories (or as a main heading, not split by date?) Split into general, by topic and local (Some examples of local histories here Irish local histories )
    • Education
    • Art, culture and sport
    • Crime and punishment
