We have a great free-space page that lists all the past mayors of New York City. However, we noticed that many of them do not have profiles yet and that several of those that do already exist could do with some improvements.

To remedy that we decided to have a New York City Mayors Challenge!

How to Participate

There are three ways to participate:

1. Create a profile for a mayor that isn't on WikiTree yet and link the profile from List of New York City Mayors. The profile must include sources other than Wikipedia. (3 points)

2. Improve a profile for a mayor that already exists on WikiTree. The checklist here would be a good guideline to work from. (3 points; if two different members make significant improvements, you each get 2 points)

3. Connect one of the unconnected Mayors. (5 points)

To join, add your WikiTree ID in the box you are working on. For example, if you are Eowyn Langholf and you are creating a profile, you would put "Langholf-2 in progress" in that box. When you are finished, remove "in progress" and leave your WikiTree ID in the box so we know who completed each item.

If you aren't sure how to edit the table, leave a comment on this page and we will help!

Once everything is completed, we'll review each profile to make sure the challenge requirements are met, tally the points and announce a winner!

Hello everyone! I connected Abraham Beame today.... Happy 2021!

I also created profiles for William Wickham and Abraham Hall and connected them to the tree!

Great news! I guess we will see the connection paths tomorrow, after the data get refreshed. It looks like Beame has a complicated connection path.

Do you have sources to add to the William Wickham profile?

I was wondering if they could be the same person, but the newspaper article definitely says Mayor Thomas Hood. Also, Noell's will went into probate on 4 Oct 1702, Hood died in 1702. One died of some disease similar to yellow fever and the other died of small pox.
It's weirder than that. At https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk%3AList_of_mayors_of_New_York_City#Thomas_Hood I read the following:

The official list of NYC mayors does not mention Hood, so I did some Googling. As near as I can tell, a 19th century list had Hood instead of Noell, that list was widely copied, and some contemporary sources "corrected" that by including them both. However, the vast majority of definitive sources, such as the city's Green Book and New York City Mayors by Ralph J. Caliendo [cites https://books.google.com/books?id=n6Ku20Sh5vwC&pg=PA61] include Noell and not Hood. I've therefore removed Hood from this list, and have redirected Hood's article to Thomas Noell until some other evidence comes along. Beyond My Ken 03:59, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure what to do about Thomas Hood. If you search for him on wikipedia (disambiguous), the link leads to Thomas Noell instead. Thomas Noell's entry says Philip French succeeded him. However, I did find a newspaper article that calls Thomas Hood the Mayor. It just states that he gave the oath of freeman to some people and died in 1702 from "the great sickness of New-York." It says Philip French followed Hood on 19 October. I just answered my own question. Hood was mayor for only 2 weeks in 1702 before he died.
We have had an increase of 20 profiles for Mayors since this challenge started! Unfortunately, there are almost that many still needing profiles...

Current scores (if my calculations are to be trusted) are:

  • Selvaggio-84 - 97 points (12 new profiles plus a bunch of new profile connections and improved profiles). Thank you, Lucy!!
  • Lewis-24639 - 21 points (7 new profiles)
  • Stevenson-3628 - 15 hard-earned points for connecting profiles
  • Rassinot-1 - 9 points for profile improvements
  • Roehl-22 - 8 points for profile improvement and connection for Mayor McKee [SORRY THAT I OVERLOOKED THIS ONE!]

(I also created one of the new profiles, but I'm not eligible to compete in the challenge...)

Whoosh! Lucy continues to collect Big Apple mayors. Since the last tally, she created and improved Edward Cooper's profile and connected him to the tree; she significantly improved Tiemann and Ed Koch; and she connected Gaynor to the big tree. That's 17 more points added to her 25 (if my arithmetic is right), for a total of 42

Meanwhile Deb has created two more starter profiles (O'Brien and McKee), bringing her total up to 21 points.

S Stevenson hasn't announced victory yet on the project of connecting LaGuardia, but he's connected now. It took a bunch of new profiles to reach from him to Albert Van Voorhees, a New Netherland descendant born in 1716. Huzzah! (And 5 points).

Isabelle also hasn't declared victory on McClellan, but he's much improved.

Update on the challenge scores:
  • Lucy Selvaggio-Diaz has cruised into the lead, with 3 new profiles (Woodhull, Tiemann, and Gaynor), 2 substantially improved profiles (Woodhull and Vance), and two connections to the big tree (Woodhull and Tiemann). She's still busy, but at the moment I count 25 points.
  • Deb Durham has created 5 starter profiles (O'Dwyer, Pelliteri, Lindsay, Beame, and Koch), for 15 points.
  • Isabelle Rassinot is busy improving McClellan, but hasn't posted here yet.
  • S. Stevenson has been working on connecting LaGuardia.

Thanks for the progress so far! But I can't help but notice that there are plenty of opportunities for new competitors to achieve Big Apple Bragging Rights here.

The scores so far:
  1. Deb Durham has created 5 starter profiles, for 15 points.
  2. Lucy Selvaggio-Diaz created one new profile, improved it substantially beyond the basic level needed to for challenge credit, and connected it, so I reckon she has 11 points. And she's working on another.
