Description

This is the index to deaths in New York State from 1880-1956. Records include file numbers (death cert #). Copies may be ordered from NYS Dept of Health. According to the publisher, some things to note when searching this recordset:

  • 1880 and 1881 have limited data
  • 1943 has very poor readability
  • New York City deaths are generally not included with a few exceptions since New York City and New York State are different vital records jurisdictions. Some neighborhoods — such as Flushing (Queens) or Canarsie (Brooklyn) — do show up in pre-1897/1898 index since they weren’t incorporated as part of NYC at the time
  • Not included until 1914: Yonkers, Buffalo, and Albany.
Note: Reclaim The Records has made FOIA requests for missing data. As of December 2017, only Buffalo's death index is available, and it has been uploaded to the Internet Archive.

Notes

This index is considered an original source and supersedes other records such as genealogy books, memories, oral histories, and tombstones.

My Heritage has easier lookup (by name) than those at Internet Archive and Find My Past unless you know death year. Their site has a free trial and many libraries offer free remote access through the library homesite with a library card login.

Original records are type-written with ink-fade due to age, thus low-quality reading, so get out your magnifying glass or digital re-imager/magnifier.
