Newbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony

Succeeded by: Category: Newbury, Massachusetts

From 1635/6 a court was held quarterly in the Massachusetts Bay, New England, in the first quarter at Ipswich to which Neweberry belonged, in the second quarter at Salem to which Saugus belonged, in the third quarter at Newe Towne, to which Charlton, Concord, Meadford and Waterton belonged and in the fourth quarter at Boston to which Rocksbury, Dorchester, Weymothe, and Hingham belonged.[1]

The court records provide a detailed view of life in the early colony, for example:

  • at the quarterly court at Ipswich on 29 September 1646, "John Emery, for his miscarriage with the wife of Henry Traverse, was fined 3 shillings or to be whipped, and pay witness fee to Christopher Bartlet. Bound to good behaviour and not to frequent the company of the wife of Henry Traverse."[2]
  • Gudy Silver and Gudy Blumifield were witnesses to Elizabeth Randall of Newberie calling "gudy Siluer base lieing divell, base lieing tode base lying sow, bas liing iade." Elizabeth presented on 30:7:1651 for using sinful language and again at the Court held at Ipswich on 30 March 1362 for evil language but was discharged because no witness appeared, although John Emery testified that Goodwife Bloomfield and Goodwife Silver were summoned.[3]
