Sunday Schools, May 1908

School Prizes, 6 August 1909 PRIZE DISTRIBUTION. - The prizes for attendance at the Council school were distributed on Friday by Coun. T.J. Stokoe and Miss Stokoe. A number of handsome volumes, the gift of Mr Stokoe, for proficiency in general knowledge, were awared as follow :- Girls: 1, Olive Ferris' ; 2, Alice Edwards ; 3, Beatrice Jones. Boys  ; 1, Cyril W Marwood ; 2, Bertie Ireland ; 3, Ernest George. A book prize, offered by Mr G. Hay Morgan, M.P., was awared to Olive Ferris. Mr Stokoe, who gave the boys and girls an interesting and instructive address, and Miss Stokoe were thanked for what they had done, the Rev. W. Marwood, Mr Sandy and Mr James (headmaster) speaking to the resolution. [1]

Hockey, 15 March 1913 Brecon Sports Club v. Brecon Girls' County School. - Played on the Sports Club ground, on Saturday, the Girls' County School team defeating the homesters to the tune of 4 goals to nil. Olive is listed in the County School Team.[2]

Brecon County School Girls at Sport, 5 July 1913 The final matches in tennis, croquet, cricket, and other sports were played off on the School grounds on Saturday afternoon, the occassion being happily favoured with fine weather. Invitations to be present were sent to the govenors, parents and the staff of the Boys' Intermediate School, and a good company assembled to witness some interesting and keenly-contested matches. Mrs M. F. Thomas very kindly made generous contributions to the prize list and distributed the prizes to successful competitors as follows:- TOURNAMENT PRIZES. These inlcuded tennis and cricket as well as ; Croquet (prizes given by Miss Bonner and Miss Brierley) - Olive Ferris and Gladys Williams. Olive was also fourth in the Flag Race. [3]

St. David's Day 1914 St. David's Day was celebrated as enthusiastically as usual on Friday afternoon, by the girls of the Brecon County School in the Assembly Hall, tastefully decorated. Among those present was Mrs H. Herbert, Brynmarlais, Ammanford, sister of the Headmistress. The proceedings opened with the singing of "St. David's Day." Then followed an operetta entitled "Merrie England," introduced by a maypole dance. Lively choruses followed, and pretty solos by Gaynor Davies, Olive Ferris, Maggie James, Gladys Morgan and Hilda Morgan. [4]

Appointment, 20 September 1917 Appointment - Miss Olive Ferris, daughter of Mr and Mrs Ferris, of High Town, has recently been appointed an assistant mistress at the Council School. [5]

Father's funeral, 27 August 1924 The late Mr John Ferris. - The late Mr John Ferris of High Town whose death at the age of 61 years was announced in our last issue was the son of the late Mr and Mrs George Ferris of Clyro, and came to Hay when 17 years old as a clerk in the firm of Messrs Robert Williams and Sons Ltd., and for 30 years was their chief clerk. Since his marriage in 1891, Mrs Ferris had carried out a stationery business in High Town. On leaving Messrs R. Williams and Sons, Mr Ferris started in the coal business and carried this on until his health gave way. Deceased was one of the founders of the Welsh Border Lodge of Buffaloes in 1903 and was also a member of the Court "Perseverance," A.O.F., and of the Hearts of Oak Society. For a short time he served on the Hay Urban District Council. He leaves a widow, two sons (one of whom is married and in Vancouver) and two daughters (one married). Mr Ferris was educated at Hampton Grammar School, Glasbury and was a first cousin of Mr George Lansbury, M.P. The funeral which was largely attended, much respect and sympathy being shown, took place on Wednesday, the 27th ult. The service was held at the Congregational Church, the Rev. Idris Davies (pastor) officiating, and the interment was at the Cemetery. The chief mourners were, Mrs Ferris (widow), Mr Aubrey Ferris (son), Mr and Mrs Basil Watkins (son-in-law, and daughter), Miss Olive Ferris (daughter), Mr W. T. Davies (brother-in-law), and Mrs Davies, Mr and Mrs Pritchard (brother and sister-in-law), Mr Wm. Townsend and Mrs Charles Townsend (cousins), Mr John Williams (uncle). Members of the Welsh Border of Lodge Buffaloes acted as bearers. Bro. E.G. Mayall, R.O.H. read the burial service of the R.A.O.B. The large number of wreaths included one from the brethren of the Welsh Border Lodge, R.A.O.B. [6]

University, 1926 Teacher's Progress. - Miss Olive Ferris, assistant mistress at the Hay County School, has been admitted into the Independent College, Bankgor, at the head of the entrants. There were 17 candidates and Miss Ferris obtained 81% average marks in papers set for the examination. She will procedd for her Arts Course to the University College, Bangor. Miss Ferris is the second daughter of the late Mr. J. Ferris and of Mrs. Ferris, High Town, Hay. [7]

Lady in the Pulpit, May 1927 The novelty of seeing a lady in the pulpit drew large congregations to Christ Church English Congregationals on Sunday. She was Miss Olive Ferris, of Bangor College, and her discourses were listened to with keen attention. [8]


Delivering Sermons, September 1927 HAY. Baptist Church. - Miss Olive Ferris of Bangor University occupied the pulpit at the Baptist Church on Sunday and delivered impressive sermons to large and appreciateive congregations. [9]

Appointment, March 1937 Miss Ferris, of Kenchester, to be Head Infant's Teacher. - Miss Olive Ferris who for the past three years has been on the staff at Kenchester School, has been appointed head teacher of the Infants' Department of the Kington County School. She will take up her duties in April. Miss Ferris is a daughter of Mrs. Samuel, Elmsleigh, Cusop, and a second cousin to Mr. George Lansbury, M.P. [10]

Marriage of Miss Olive Ferris, August 1937 The wedding took place quietly at Southsea, Hants., of Miss Olive Ferris, headmistress of Kington Junior School. The bridegroom was Mr John J Marriott, the second son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Marriott, of Clavering Avenue, Wanstead, Essex, and a Warrant Officer on board H.M.S. "Frobisher". The bride is the younger daughter of the late Mr. John Ferris of High Town, Hay and of Mrs. Isaac Samuel, of Elmsleigh, Cusop, Hay. She gained her B.A. degree at Bangor University and had teaching appointments at Croydon and Kenchester (Hereford) before going to Kington last year. Mr. and Mrs. Marriott flew to the Isle of Wight for a short honeymoon prior to Mr. Marriott's departure on a five month cruise of the Mediterranean. He belongs to one of the London Masonic Lodges.
